Venus and Mars

What I dream of is an art of balance. - Henri Matisse

What ever happened to charm school?  Or some modern version thereof, in which young persons are trained in the arts of poise, good manners and appropriate conversation?  We might hope for an emphasis on such civil practices under a gracious Libra new moon. Certainly we can aim for such.  Yet stationing Mars retrograde in Venus' other sign, Taurus, at this New Moon may make the prevailing mood short on grace and inclined toward a crude pragmatism. We may find people being more pushy, sullen or irritable than usual, carrying anger from some ill-defined source.  We may find people saying they need to pee, or go to the can, rather than use the bathroom; strangers may begin conversations by talking about how backed up their toilets are rather than making respectful opening comments.  (True stories! And I could give you cruder examples from my recent experience.)

Before you Venus-inclined get the vapors over all this crassness, there may be a point to it.  There's a place for social grace, and a place for assertive directness.  A place for charm and a place for anger.  One point of Mars retrograde in Venus' sign is to get these respective zones of love and war, of cooperation and individuality, into balance.  On the way to such balance, we may find ourselves on the giving or receiving end of situations of which Miss Manners may not approve (but Howard Stern might).  A more constructive use of Mars' intensification is to make art (Venus) that incorporates more color, anger, heat, physical action (Mars) than usual.  We'll also be more inner-directed than usual, possibly due to financial, emotional or sexual circumstances.  For example, driving less to save money on gas may give us more time to navel-gaze and discover our true motivations.  Viva Mars retrograde.

The New Moon/Solar Eclipse October 3 and the Full Moon/Lunar Eclipse October 17 illuminate the Aries/Libra spectrum, which asks us to balance courtesy and cooperation with individuality and direct action. Good questions for the Aries/Libra spectrum:  Where do I rely too much on others?  Where do I not ask for enough from others?  Generally speaking, am I better at taking individual action, or cooperative relating? Am I authentic in my relationships?  Do my assertions express my true values?  How can I be myself yet honor social harmony?  How does my life reflect the words of the 12th century prayer, the Desiderata:  "as far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons"?   (The "without surrender" part is Mars; the "good terms" part is Venus.)

It's possible during Mars retrograde that a backlog of issues not expressed will need review and clearing in order that we can come closer to these good terms with others.   We may need to act out or feel certain extremes before we come back to center. Even if we tip the scales quite far to one side or another, the Libra Solar Eclipse reminds us that our aim is balance.  By bringing the difficult or ugly in ourselves to light, we can heal it and make it sweeter.  We can find that precious center point of balance that encompasses both love and passion, boldness and kindness.
