Proving Newton's First
Law of Motion
My brother, a solar Taurus, once said to me when I asked what
he was doing as he lounged on the sofa, that he was proving Newton's First
Law of Motion: an object at rest tends to stay at rest. Fewer states
of existence are more vaunted for the Taurus soul than relaxing in safe and
comfortable surroundings with the prospect of these conditions continuing
indefinitely. This month, with the New Moon
in Taurus, we'd all do well to give ourselves the opportunity for thorough
relaxation. Taureans also love nature,
and as she's doing her best to give us the blossoms of spring, it's a great
time to get out and enjoy her bounty.
It's also a great month to experiment with the idea of doing one
thing at a time. In our multi-tasking world (save that for next month,
with the New Moon in Gemini), it's all too easy to forget the pleasure of
deeply savoring a single activity. This doesn't have to be anything
ultra refined or noteworthy -- I forced myself to do nothing but watch Joe
Versus the Volcano the other day -- an '80s flashback if there ever was
one, complete with Tom Hanks in a mullet haircut -- and it was surprising
how enjoyable it was to resist the urge to pick up something else to do while
I was watching it.
The New Moon's square to Neptune increases our desire to experience
beauty, art and the spiritual realms of life this month rather than the ambitiously
practical. Yet based on the earthy nature of Taurus, we may also enjoy
acquiring useful practical goods as well as expressing affection. Whether
making mud pies or hugging a loved one, using the sense of touch this month
may prove highly pleasurable.
What I find most interesting about this New Moon is that it starts
the theme for the second half of 2005. Thus far the year's main theme
has been a stationary Saturn in Cancer, which will leave that sign in mid-July.
But overlapping with that, ushered in by this New Moon, is the theme
of the second half of the year -- the Taurus-Scorpio polarity and how well
we balance our lives between our own values and resources and those of important
others. This New Moon gives us an opportunity to state the thesis we
want to work with for the rest of the year and into early 2006 -- during
which time we'll test the initial approach we set up. Planetary conditions
at this New Moon suggest that our approach will be expressed initially in
intuitive, visual and physical rather than primarily verbal ways. Painting
or drawing our goals or expressing them in feelings or song, along with making
practical changes in our actions or to our surroundings may be more effective
than a lot of talk or logical analysis. Our initial ideas of how we want
to establish our values in the world will be tested and retested during the
Mars retrograde cycle later this year, after which time we'll know how to
better integrate the oppositions or contributions of others to our stated
thesis and values.
Meanwhile, take a picnic to the park and enjoy the pleasant spring
days while sampling Taurean pleasures out-of-doors. When passersby
ask what you're doing, you'll know to take your cue from Isaac Newton.

NEW MOON FORECAST
FOR SUN AND RISING SIGNS
(dates are approximate depending on year of birth)
ARIES (Mar
21-Apr 19): The New Moon occurs in your Second House of earned
money, possessions and values. New work or income opportunities
may come your way this month. It's a great
month to establish new approaches to your work and surround yourself with
coworkers or clients who share your values. Friends may be flaky or
unreliable this month, or alternatively may serve as inspiration. Your
dreams may have a surprising message for you.
Best days for Aries: Jun 1-2
TAURUS (Apr 20-May
20): The New Moon occurs in your First House
of action, identity and personal presence.
The spotlight shines on you this month, so use it
to your advantage. Put your best foot forward and don't expect
supervisors or people in authority to notice or appreciate what you're doing
just yet. They've got their heads in the clouds this month, but they
may somehow inspire you just the same. Sudden experiences with friends
or groups may bring new insight.
Best days for Taurus: May 8, Jun 3-4
GEMINI (May 21-Jun
20): The New Moon occurs in your Twelfth House
of spirituality, retreat and behind-the-scenes activities.
You may want to keep a low profile this month and
see what your nighttime dreams have to tell you.
A sudden occurrence involving home and family members or a surprise
development in career direction may throw you off guard a bit; keep your
sense of faith and remain flexible enough to adjust course.
Best days for
Gemini: May 9-10, Jun 5-6
CANCER (Jun 21-Jul
22): The New Moon occurs in your Eleventh House of friends,
groups, business income, humanitarian causes,
and long-range hopes and wishes. Beginnings
or changes in these areas may occur for you this month. Try
not to be too cavalier this month; while your attention is on your friendships,
your intimate relationships or joint finances could get overlooked. Exciting
travel or education opportunities could emerge suddenly; allow plenty of
time in your schedule for surprises.
Best days for Cancer: May 11-12
LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22):
The New Moon occurs in your Tenth House of authorities,
reputation and career. You may be more professionally
active than usual this month, especially with
those in positions of leadership. Relationship matters are
more foggy and unpredictable. Though you will probably try to repair emotional
issues with sexual connection, it will only work if you're respecting the
deeper emotions of your partner and his or her point of view as well.
Best days for Leo: May 14-15
VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep
22): The New Moon occurs in your Ninth House of religion,
philosophy, higher education, long-range plans
and long distance travel. New doors may open
for you in one or more of these areas. Considering a long range
risk, even if only opening your mind to the possibility, is a good idea this
month. Don't bother trying to stay organized or follow a health regime
too strictly; it may be easier to get things together in those areas next
month. Avoid sudden arguments with your partner by having a flexible
attitude wherever possible.
Best days for Virgo: May 16-18
LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct
22): The New Moon occurs in your Eighth House
of joint finances, sexuality and secrets.
Reviewing investments, deepening partnerships, and considering
counseling or therapy may be on the agenda this month.
Children and creativity are in focus, though you may want to avoid
demanding too much organization in your life or theirs. Allowing time
in your schedule for spontaneity is important this month.
Best days for Libra: May 19-20
SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov
21): The New Moon occurs in your Seventh House
of partnership and marriage. New partnerships
or phases of an existing partnership may emerge
at this time. Looking at how you can stabilize ventures through
association with others may be indicated. You'll benefit from listening to
other people's points of view more closely this month. Expect sudden
developments with children and creativity, or with speculative ventures such
as the stock market or casino games.
Best days for
Scorpio: May 21-22
SAGITTARIUS (Nov
22-Dec 21): The New Moon
occurs in your Sixth House of work, health and
service. You may want to review your health and fitness
regimes or organize your work environment for greater
productivity. Making that long postponed doctor's appointment could
give you a reassuring reality check. You might find you communicate
with your doctor or coworkers better through pictures than words. Sudden
developments in your home and family life leave you feeling a little jolted
but energized.
Best days for Sagittarius: May 23-24
CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan
19): The New Moon occurs in your Fifth House of romance,
creativity, children and play. New beginnings,
breakthroughs or changes may occur for you in these
areas. Launch a creative project or find one you started in
the past and bring it back to life. Focus on the childlike
creative spirit within and bring a sense of play to whatever you
do. Don't try to get a grip on money matters this month; decisions
made may seem to slip through your fingers. Go for a spur of the moment
drive with an exhilarating friend instead.
Best days for Capricorn: May 25-26
AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb
18): The New Moon occurs in your Fourth House
of home, family and property. You may want
to move, reorganize or redecorate your living space.
You may have lots of activity in your home this month. Your
family will understand you better than the public, so keep those home fires
burning. Surprise income or expenses may arise this month; expect money
matters to be a little erratic.
Best days for
Aquarius: May 27-28
PISCES (Feb 19-Mar
20): The New Moon occurs in your Third House
of local travel, transportation, communication,
neighbors and siblings. Opportunities for
change or new starts may emerge in these areas. You may find it easier
to link up with others for mutual assistance by means of telephone,
e-mail or fax. You're never the daredevil of the zodiac, but this
month you may especially want to avoid risky physical activities. Wear something
out-of-the-ordinary instead and see how it energizes your life.
Best days for Pisces: May 29-30
