This month's New Moon falls in the family oriented, emotional and domestic sign of Cancer.  Cancer is the first water sign of the zodiac and the wellspring of life, providing the water for physical birth as well as the emotion that connects tribes, clans, families.  The lunar energies of Cancer are much like an egg that binds a recipe, providing an important ingredient that holds not only breads and cakes but families and societies together.    

Funny thing, though -- most of the other signs spend their time running from the closeness, connection and family bonds that Cancer represents and craves. Certainly the air and fire signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius, Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) can have difficulty allowing themselves to experience ongoing emotional bonds.  Earth signs, too (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), though they are more retentive than the air or fire signs, can be challenged with allowing not only physical, financial or material bonds but also emotional connections.

For this month, focus on holding the feeling connections created with others a little longer -- hold a loved one's gaze a little longer, lay in the hammock another half hour, express feelings gently to another and stay connected (that's hold still, air and fire signs!) a little longer than you usually might to participate in the exchange.  This is perhaps not easy, but well worth the resulting emotional connection as well as physical healing and well-being.

To cultivate the energy of Cancer this month:  create family gatherings, cook, tend or plant a garden, spend time around water, spend time with children, spend time with parents, especially mothers, go where you will be emotionally nurtured or can nurture others, meditate on each relationship in your life and express gratitude for it.  A good animal mother will cling to her cubs in the best of ways, protecting them and fighting for their survival and the best of life.  Notice what you cling to in life, and whether this works to your benefit or not.  In any areas of excessive dependency, aim to grow from a child into a self-soothing mother.  

The highest energy days this month are July 5, 6, 14, 22.  The public mood will be dynamic and you may accomplish much, but lay low if you're feeling like you'd rather not get caught in the fray.  This month, lean a little into your relationships.  Find out which ones buoy you up, and carry you through life in the sacred frigate called family.
